Paint chip note cards {a tutorial!}

I totally meant to get this up yesterday, but I wasn't able to touch my computer for 36 hours. I was dyyyyyyyying!! But it's all good now, and now you get a fun little tutorial!

Fun little note cards! Embellished with paint chips. I have a small stash of paint chips left from other projects and when I found a little circle hole punch on clearance at Michael's I knew what I wanted to do! I didn't know it was take three months to get there...but I did it. :)

I like to think of it as "real" card making, since unless you are a really awesome cardmaker like my former roommate {Brielle}, you don't have fun stamps, embossers, paper, and other little card thingys lying around to make a really beautiful card. Not only are they cute, they're super easy to make! You will need:

• Paint chips, whatever color you want
• Circle hole punch
• Pencil
• Ruler
• Paper cutter (optional, but nice!)
• Scissors (if you don't have a paper cutter)
• Letter stamps
• Ink
• Cardstock (it's white and under all the other stuff, I sweat it's there!)
• Glue 

First, take the hole punch to the paint chips to get colorful, fun little circles.

Cut out some cardstock to create the card. Fold it in half and create a very nice crease with the side of the ruler.

Glue on those little circles to your hearts. I'm a huge sucker for gray and yellow, so that's what I experimented with first.

Then, using the stamps and ink pad, add any message you want to the front.

And just like that, you've got yourself a personalized, handmade card to use! You can whip out a ton of these very quickly, make them for invitations, thank you cards, thinking of you cards, whatever! Add a few new hold punches to the mix and your possibilities are nearly endless!

I had a lot of fun mixing colors, textures, and creating one folds and no fold cards. I've even tested a few of them out!

Tutorial Tuesday- Paint Chip Wall Art

I just LOVE practically free crafts, don't you? Paint chips have got to be one of the most perfect resources for creating free crafts. And dang, some people can do amazing things with paint chips!

Like this! Hot dang this is cool! {This is by artist Peter Combe, click here for the original post} I wouldn't classify today's craft as "seriously amazing" or "cool" but I would classify it as "doable" and "fun." And totally free for me!

March is teasing me with the thought of spring, so I felt the need to liven up the space in the dark and dungeon-like basement I live it. I haven't decided where to put it yet, but it still makes me smile when I walk past it. To make one, you will need:

• Various colors of Behr paint chips (at least three of each color)
• Large canvas
• Paints (I used acrylic)
• Paint brushes
• Glue gun (not pictured)
• A decisive mind

 My original idea was a kind of springy background with clouds and grass. So I painted the canvas a light blue...

Painted some white clouds.

And painted some grass. Took a good look at it and thought it looked STUPID. I HATED it. So I painted over it.

This time I went with purples and blues. Still hated it. Wasn't what I was looking for.

By then the paint was really building it up, so I scraped it all off.

And stared and stared, trying to be inspired. Thought this looked kinda cool, but decided against it.

I finally settled on a combo of whites and yellows and greens. That's springy right? This whole process took a painfully long time, which is why I suggest bringing a decisive mind to the table for this one!

To make the colorful tulips, I took three Behr paint chips and fanned them out to create a tulip looking shape. Then using my trusty glue gun, I glued them on the canvas. It looks way better in real life, I couldn't get the lighting right so the pale colors just look washed out. But I love it, I love the colors, I love the festive springyness of it. I can't wait to see it on my wall, I just need to decide where to put it!

Paint Chip Pumpkins

I was going to have a really cool tutorial for a sewing project today, but I failed miserably at it! Seriously, epic crafting fail. So, no sewing tute for today, but I will show you something else I've been working on!

A few days ago, David and I were at Home Depot looking for a part to fix a drawer. I wasn't all that interested, so I meandered over to the paint chips. I've always loved seeing so many different colors and reading the fantastic names they come up with! (One of my favorites was "cranberry zing.") I grabbed a particularly vibrant orange and read the name...

I was practically floored. Of course!! A paint chip pumpkin patch! I grabbed several of them so I could go home and make....

A paint chip pumpkin! I've seen tons of paper pumpkins on the internet, and with vibrant colors and stiffer paper, I thought paint chips would work perfectly! A simple and FREE craft!

Want to make some of your own? (Trust me, you're going to make "some!")

You will need:

• Orange and green paint chips (FREE from Home Depot!)
• Glue gun (or stapler, brads, tacky glue, whatever you have will work!)
• Ruler
• Scissors
• Pencil

The first thing you'll need to do is cut your samples into 1-inch wide stripes. I used 8 per pumpkin. You don't have to spell out your name with them, I was just having fun. :)

This next part is the trickiest of the entire project. Since the paint chips are so much stiffer than regular paper, they need a little help curving. Hold each end of the strip, and pull it tightly against the edge of a table. (In the picture I'm not pulling very tightly, it was just to show the technique.) Pull it back and forth against the edge of the table several times (ok, like 30-40 times, but it only takes a few seconds!) until the strip has a little bit of curve to it.

This is what you'll end up with. See how they're nice and curved by themselves?

Now to assemble the pumpkin! Make sure that glue gun is on! Take two strips and line them up perpendicularly. (You know, create a right angle using the two strips?) Dab a little bit of glue on them and stick them together.

To make everything line up nicely, it's helpful to always work with the side perpendicular to the one you just finished, not the one opposite of it. Glue the next one down...

And the next one to get a cross shape. Once you have that, you need to attach the tops together.

Working one at a time, glue each one together, still working with perpendicular strips.

Tadah!!! You can leave it like this if you want, but I didn't want to see the bar codes and writing on the inside, so I added some more strips.

I just added strips to the open sides of the pumpkin and glued them to the top. With the basic shape already done, this will be much easier.

Huzzah! We almost have a pumpkin!

I added a green star to it, and then realized that I'm making a pumpkin, not a tomato. Stupid me! Don't add a star!

You do need to add a stem though. Cut a small rectangle out of the green paint chip (I'm talking a centimeter wide and an inch tall!) Fold it in half.

Fold the two ends under, making a triangle shape. This just gives the glue something to stick to.

Cut a thinner, longer strip of green and coil it around a pencil to get a spring like shape.

Glue them both on and you're done! Make several more so your first pumpkin isn't lonely.

I experimented with different shades of orange.

A tiny, "spooky" pumpkin.

"Buttered sweet corn" on "Cinderella's dress." Aren't those the coolest paint names?

This one was fun, I cut up two different reddish chips and arranged them all in order from darkest to lightest (the lighting doesn't look right in the picture.)

It came out to this. It's one of my favorites, I wish I could show you how cool it is in pictures!

 My little pumpkin patch. They're now scattered all over my bookshelf! I love them, I smile when I look at them.

Awww isn't he cute? He REALLY wanted to play with the pumpkins, I guess anything ball shaped is considered a ball. :)
