Is there more to life than being really, really, really, ridiculously good looking?

I'm sorry, I couldn't help it. I just love that quote.

Did you know my mom minored in photography? True story. She always took our Christmas card pictures and all of our senior pictures and even makes fabulous scrapbook pages.

My senior picture. How is this seven years ago yet I still look the same? Ok, maybe I've aged A LITTLE. A teensy little bit....my hair is longer, that's for sure, by like three whole inches. And I part it on the side now instead of the middle. Oooooo we're living on the edge now.

Moving on. Mom takes good pictures. I dress up and bring my camera to her house and bug Mom nonstop until she spends 10 minutes taking pictures of the hubs and I. (Right as the sun is setting...procrastinator much?) She finally caves in. (squeaky wheel gets the oil right?) These are the results.

Disclaimer: Husband and I don't pose together very well. Haven't quite got that down yet.

Half black and white is cool right now right?

This one is my fave. It actually looks like we like each other.

My right side is not my good side. My left side is. But David is uber cute, all tender looking.

This is the really awkward one that I had to include for you to laugh at. David's eyes half closed and drunk-looking. Awkward hands on hips. Awkward arms at sides. Awkward smiles. Awkward is my middle name. Amie Awkward Allen. I'm also a car insurance company on the side.

Outfit breakdown:
Headband: made it {my own tutorial here}
Lace Tank: Kohl's
Cardigan: Target
Jeans: Kohl's or something
Boots: Payless

I'm a big spender.

I got the boots, an outfit post

Remember how I told you I model part time?

I lied. I may have stretched the truth a little bit. I am ridiculous in front of a camera. I have no idea how to pose, NO idea what to do with my arms, and I tend to make really weird faces.

Yeah...like that one. But I'm not showing off my face, I'm showing off The Boots.

(Cue that "Ahhh" angel sound when something awesome happens.) I found The Boots! Actually, David found them. After many failed attempts at finding them in almost every single one of the stores you suggested (some were too far out to get to) I finally convinced David to take me to the outlet mall. Found them in the first store. First pair I tried on. Holla!! Best part?? They were only $25, not even kidding! My budget was around $50, so now I can buy a pair of skinny jeans to go with them without feeling guilty at all!

I promise they are a lovely espresso brown, not black like they look in the pictures. Hubs and I aren't too good with the camera.

Outfit breakdown:
Earrings: Made em!
Scarf: Some nice street vendor in NYC, $5
Cardi: Target, $20
Lace tank: Hollister clearance, $6
Belt: Aeropostal clearance, $2
Jeans: uh...Kohl's maybe? $20ish?
Boots: I think the box says Lifestride, but who knows? $25
Outfit total: $78, not too bad!

Can I tell you a secret though? The boots aren't my favorite part of this outfit. The jeans are. Why? Because I can fit into them again! For the past year I have been bound to only two pairs of jeans and like 1/3 of my tops because I had gained too much weight to wear anything. But I'm down 15lbs (5 more to go!) and I am happy to say that I can now wear almost 10 pairs of jeans in my closet. I am so happy. :)

Happy about the boots too. Bring it on, fall. I am ready to plow through you looking moderately better than I did before.

Guest Post: How to shoot landscapes from Burned Images Photography

Today we have the lovely and talented Heather from {Burned Images Photography} She and I studied at the same university, how cool is that? She's here to help you grasp the basics of shooting landscapes, for all of you noobs like me. :)
---------------------------------------------------------------------
I'm so excited to be guest blogging for Kitty Cats and Airplanes! Don't you just love her crafts & all her sewing ideas?!

I'm studying photography at a university in Idaho & I love it! I often get asked about cameras or tips on how to take different pictures. My favorite thing to photograph is landscapes. So you get a little something-something from me: a tutorial on photographing landscapes! (How awesome am I?...pretty awesome, I know.)

In order to do this I need to confront a couple of myths first.
Myth 1: You need a "nice" camera to get quality pictures.
Truth is, you don't! Shocker, I know. For most people "nice" means something like this:
courtesy of CNet
This isn't the case. For the first 3 years after I got into photography I used something like this:
courtesy of iTech News
Want to know something? Most of my clients never knew! Prosumer cameras are a great way to go if you don't have the money or time to devote to a SLR. Just trust me on this.

Myth 2: You have to shoot during the sunniest part of the day.
Truth is, that's probably the worst time to shoot! If the sun is blaring down on the surface of the building you shoot, you're not going to get any of the great texture you want to capture. A really bright sun is going to cast weird shadows, and if the sun is behind you, your shadow will be visible along the bottom of the picture. Not something you want. Again, just trust me.
No roof or road texture. The area underneath is too dark to make anything out.

So what do you do? Watch your weather forecast. Sounds weird, right? Thing is, the most beautiful sunrises and sunsets have tons of clouds. The light bounces off the clouds and can create a great light filter. Like this:
I keep telling you to just trust me!
If it's going to rain in the afternoon, go out in the morning. If it rained earlier in the day or will during the night, go out in the evening. You'll get some great cloud formations. Also, just because it's cloudy or gray doesn't mean you shouldn't go out shooting, especially if you're trying to photograph people. Just think: no facial shadows, no squinting eyes, no super white backgrounds because the sun's too bright--it's perfect!
It can also create great texture
Even the little puffy ones are great.
(Amie comment: I saw that beautiful temple get built, from start to finish. It was amazing, it's even more beautiful inside!) Sometimes though, sunshine is inevitable. I mean, who doesn't like sunlight? (Vampires....right...) Just don't think that your pictures are ruined or there's no hope if there's tons of sunlight. If you're taking pictures of a landscape, make sure you zoom out to capture as much as possible. That way, you're utilizing all the light possible. It also keeps the lack of texture and abundance of shadows less obvious. If you're trying to get a person in the shot, find a tree with lots of shade and put that person underneath. Case and point:
sometimes, I know what I'm talking about ;)
Myth 3: You have to be facing the sunrise or sunset to get great pictures.
Truth is, sometimes you just need to turn around! If you're facing the sunset, you'll miss this:
Guess what, NOT done with a dSLR!

The most important thing to remember though, is to keep trying! I don't know anyone who can do anything without loads of practice first. Another great thing about digital photography: you can see the pictures immediately after you take them! Look at them. Try turning a little to the right or left and see what you get. Use a tripod. Low light means your camera needs to take a little longer to get the whole picture to develop. If you're not using a tripod (even a cheap one), you're going to get a shaky picture. Putting your camera on a tripod will allow the camera to remain steady during the whole shot. Help it along even more and set your camera on a timer. Just a few seconds will do the trick. That way, the camera will have time to steady itself after you press the button.

Anyway, hope that helps! Happy shooting!
--------------------------------------------------------------
My gosh, I didn't know half of those awesome tips! I wish I would have known when I still lived there! Idaho really does have some of the most gorgeous sunsets I've ever seen. Thanks so much Heather!

Two is better than one

Happy Mother's Day! I hope everyone (mommy or not) had a wonderful Mother's Day. My hubby is the sweetest, though we aren't parents yet he still made me my favorite breakfast and brought me a bouquet of my favorite flowers. He is amazing. :) I also got to see my wonderful mom and had a fantastic time, and I got to talk to my little brother who is serving a mission in Seattle. (I only get to talk to him twice a year.) It was a great day.

This week's photo challenge over at Bugaboo, Mini, Mr, and Me was "two is better than one."

We are so much better together than we are apart.

Tutorial Tuesday- Photo editing for the real woman

I know there are a bunch of you out there like me. You like to take pictures, sometimes they don't turn out the way you want to, and you need a way to edit them. I know there is Photoshop and other nice photo editing software out there, but I just don't get it. I've read tutorials, but the "layers" and all the other Photoshop lingo just never stuck. I need something that's a little more real, a little more user friendly to make my pictures a little better. Enter...
Ah yes, the infamous Picnik. After trying it out, reading reviews, and getting to know the program a little more, I upgraded to a premium account. Best decision, and totally worth the 25 bones for a whole year. (Stay tuned, you may be seeing another picnik project coming soon!) So today's tutorial is done entirely through Picnick, using a premium account. If you haven't upgraded, I suggest at least consider it. I have found it to be totally worth the investment, and it's not even a quarter of the price of Photoshop!

Let's get started shall we?

This is a picture of me this morning. Post workout, just took hair out of sweaty ponytail, unshowered, makeupless, all around, pretty gross. I can't believe I'm showing up this (and yes, I still look like this) All I've done to this picture was cropped it.

See everything that's wrong with it? I tried to take it in the only natural in the basement I live and I had the decency to wash my sweaty face, but there is still a lot to be fixed.

I opened it up in Picnik and clicked the "create" tab, then the "touch up" tab. The first thing that had to go was all my zits. Luckily right now my skin is behaving nicely! Click the blemish button, and make those blemishes disappear.

After fixing blemishes. Gosh, I wish this thing worked on my real life face!

Next was wrinkle remover. I am so blessed to have next to no wrinkles, so I really only used this tool to fix the bags under my eyes. Fix any areas you think need fixing, but don't go overboard! Adjust the size of the tool as necessary.

After fixing under eye bags. Maybe I should just try getting more sleep. HAH! Yeah, hat's not going to happen.

Next I used the airbrush tool to finely smudge away the lines from the wrinkle reducer and lightly erase discolorations on my face. This is one of my favorite tools, it's not an eraser, but it kind of smudges colors and lines together to make them things uniform and smooth looking.

After using the airbrush tool. Still a little bit of darkness under my eyes but at least the luggage is mostly gone!

Next I added the tiniest bit of sunless tanner, I'm so freakishly pale that a little color is nice, but any more than a touch will make me look ridiculous! Pick a color and darkness similar to your skin tone to avoid a nectarine-like appearance. Brush on the forehead, nose, and cheese, where the sun would normally hit your face.

Hmmm, maybe I should start thinking about investing in a bronzer?

Next, makeup! I used a light bush and added mascara. Choose a blush that complements your skin tone and brush it over your cheeks. For the mascara, I amped up the strength because my eyelashes are blonde and need a lot of help.

Ahh, it's amazing what makeup can do isn't it?

Next, I fixed lips and teeth. I whitened my teeth using the teeth whitener tool and then added a little color to my lips. Usually I wear lip gloss that naturally brings out the color of my lips, so I chose a color just a shade darker than my natural color. Use different sized brushes to fill in the lips and teeth, experiment to see what colors look good on you.

By this point Picnik was giving me problems because my picture was too big, so I had to resize. Isn't is amazing what a little teeth whitener to do?

Because this was early morning, I decided a little eye brightening was in order. This will just make the pupils a little larger, to make you a little more bright eyed. Only use this once, even if you don't notice a difference it will help the overall look of the picture. I also darkened my eyebrows, since my hair is blonde they often get lost on my face and usually need a bit of help to stand out and shape my face.

Doooooooooooooon't mind the sudden change in color of my eyes. I was having fun with the eye color changer tool and accidentally saved it! So they will be this unnatural looking blue from now on, sorry about that.

The last thing I did was brighten up my hair a little with highlights. This was how I darkened my eyebrows in the previous step. This was by far the most difficult step, it was hard to find a color that just highlighted the natural color and didn't make it look unnatural. I would suggest skipping this step unless you're having fun with the picture.

Tadah!! All done! Just a few subtle changes to really make a big difference in the picture.

Except for the change of my eye color, I think the overall look of the picture is so much better! I look less tired, my face is smoother, there is more color, and my hair is a little more blonde.

Now, I am no professional photographer. (Obviously!) My photo editing skills are far from perfect, and those professionals using a fancy program will obviously get you better, more professional looking results. So keep that in mind when you are editing your pictures. Hopefully my scratch of the surface tutuorioal  will help you on your way to getting a little bit of a nicer shot.

And have fun turning yourself into a vampire. Happy editing! Don't forget to see where I am linking up.

Still Up in the Air

It's officially SPRING!!  But, is it flip flop season or not? Spring is teasing me with that awkward, "too cold for flip flops yet too hot for shoes." Weather. C'mon Spring, puhleeeease make up your mind.

By the way, you should really be a fan of my facebook page. Jus' saying. It MIGHT be a good idea, you know. Sometime this week you'll agree with me. So go on...like me.

Welcome to the Jungle

Have you checked out Kim from Bugaboo, Mini, Mr and Me? You should, she's fabulous. Remember that contest I entered a little bit ago? She won! She just started a fun snapshot linky party. I've been dying to enter weekly photography link ups, but I've always been way too intimidated. But I'm sucking it up and conquering my fear.

This week's theme was Welcome to the Jungle. Aeris is like a mini tiger: striped, stealthy, and super scary (well, to bugs).
